Vibration Therapy vs Percussion Therapy: What's the Difference?
Understand the mechanical and practical differences between vibration devices and percussion massage guns.
Two related but different categories
Both are used in recovery routines, but they deliver mechanical stimulation differently. Vibration devices emphasize oscillation at higher frequencies and smaller displacement; percussion devices typically emphasize repeated impacts with more obvious travel.
What does the research say?
A 2025 review of athlete recovery modalities found varying degrees of support for vibration therapy, massage and compression and emphasized the need for standardized protocols. A 2026 systematic review of percussive therapy found some possible recovery effects but no clear improvement for maximum voluntary contraction or soreness, with certainty varying by outcome.
Practical choice
Comfort, intended use, ergonomics and budget matter. Neither category should be treated as a substitute for diagnosis or professional care when symptoms are severe, unexplained or persistent.
